Wildlife Alliance, the organization behind one of Southeast Asia's most effective forest protection programmes, offers something rarer: a way to show up.

Founded in 1995 as Global Survival Network and renamed Wildlife Alliance in 2006, the organization began with anti-poaching patrols in Russia's Far East, where it helped the Siberian tiger population rebound from roughly 80 individuals to over 400 in six years. It has since worked across South America, the Western Pacific, and Southeast Asia, but its deepest roots are now in Cambodia, where it has operated since 2000. There, Wildlife Alliance and its rangers protect 1.3 million hectares of tropical rainforest in the Cardamom Mountains, the largest unbroken stretch of rainforest remaining in Southeast Asia and home to more than 50 species on the IUCN Red List, including Asian elephants, Malayan sun bears, pangolins, clouded leopards, and pileated gibbons.

The threats are relentless: illegal logging, poaching, mining, slash-and-burn encroachment. Wildlife Alliance's response is hands-on and daily. Twelve ranger stations operate across the landscape, each staffed with a mix of Ministry of Environment judicial police, Royal Gendarmerie rangers, and Wildlife Alliance personnel. They conduct daily patrols, dismantling poaching camps, seizing chainsaws and vehicles, removing snares, and rescuing live wildlife. Since the programme's expansion, there has been zero elephant poaching in the Cardamoms since 2006.

The organization's reach extends beyond enforcement. Its Wildlife Rapid Rescue Team intercepts animals taken by the illegal wildlife trade. A rescue centre at Phnom Tamao, roughly 40 kilometres south of Phnom Penh, houses over 1,400 animals across more than 100 species, all seized from trafficking. A Wildlife Release Station in Koh Kong rehabilitates animals for return to the forest. Community patrol teams, trained and supported by Wildlife Alliance, now operate across the region, staffed by the people who know the terrain best.

And then there is the tiger reintroduction. Declared functionally extinct in Cambodia in 2016 after the last camera-trap sighting in 2007, tigers are now returning to the Cardamoms through a Cambodia-India partnership formalized in 2022. It was Wildlife Alliance CEO Suwanna Gauntlett who, at a national forum in 2017, asked the Cambodian Prime Minister to endorse the plan. The designated habitat sits within the Tatai Wildlife Sanctuary, and scientists believe the Cardamom Mountains could eventually support a population of up to one hundred tigers. The groundwork that made this possible, the years of daily patrolling, snare removal, prey-base recovery, and forest protection, is Wildlife Alliance's.

This is where Shinta Mani Wild enters the picture. Designed by Bill Bensley and set along 1.5 kilometres of river at the crossroads of three Cambodian national parks, this fifteen-tent camp was conceived as a conservation tool first and a luxury hotel second. Room revenues directly fund an on-site Wildlife Alliance ranger station. Guests are not adjacent to the work; they are in it. One tent to every 27 hectares of forest.

Ryan and I joined a Wildlife Alliance motorbike patrol late one afternoon. Our group included an English-speaking volunteer, two park rangers, two military personnel, and two Shinta Mani Wild guides with us on the backs of their bikes. We rode dirt paths through the national park learning what signs the rangers look for, which trails to investigate on foot, which to cover by bike. Our group found an actual illegal log pile. We watched a real investigation unfold, signage that had been torn down was repaired, and locals were questioned about who had been cutting and when. Back at the lodge, a display board tallies the programme's results: 775 confiscated chainsaws, 43 guns, 14,000 snares removed.

Whether this constitutes genuine conservation or well-produced tourism is a fair question. What I can say is that the numbers on that board are not decorative. The ranger station operates whether or not guests are watching. The forest stands because someone patrols it every day.
