Costa Rica
San José, Pacuare River, La Fortuna, Tamarindo & Santa Teresa
From San José, the route moves through three very different sides of Costa Rica. It begins on the Pacuare River, rafting into a remote rainforest lodge, then heads to La Fortuna for hanging bridges, ziplines and an evening in the hot springs. The second week slows down on the Nicoya Peninsula, with surf lessons and beach days in Tamarindo, then Christmas in a villa in Santa Teresa and a day on ATV trails down the coast. Evenings belong to the Pacific.
A two-week Christmas break and a long-held plan to finally do Costa Rica, built around a rainforest lodge reached by raft, then the beaches of the Nicoya Peninsula.
A two-week Christmas break, the five of us, somewhere warm and with enough adventure to keep three boys in their element. We'd been talking about Costa Rica for a while, and this felt like the trip that made it happen. Rainforest, ziplines, and proper beach time, all in two weeks.
I'd been reading about a luxury eco-lodge deep in the rainforest: no roads in, arrival by whitewater raft, completely off-grid. It felt like the kind of place where we'd be fully absorbed in everything around us. And that was the starting point for everything else.
