An overview of our approach
About us & membership
No. We provide the intelligence, you make the decisions.
That said, our stays include direct links and links to two boutique booking platforms we use and trust (Mr & Mrs Smith and Tablet Hotels). If you work with a travel advisor, our itineraries give you a framework to start the conversation.
We’re not here to sell you a trip. We’re here to give you clarity.
Route & Reason is for travellers who care about design, seek out distinctive experiences, and are thoughtful about when and where the investment matters. Whether you plan your own trips or work with an advisor, membership gives you the perspective and detail to make clearer decisions.
No. It’s all personally funded travel, and travel decisions made by our travellers.
When a travel advisor or agency was part of their planning journey, we credit them in the itinerary to acknowledge their work and give you the option to work with them too.
We can. But only on stays.
For each stay, where available, we provide three links to help you research: the direct website, plus two boutique booking platforms we use and trust (Mr & Mrs Smith and Tablet Hotels). If you click through to these platforms and book any hotel within about 30 days, we may earn a commission at no cost to you. Occasionally, some direct hotel links are affiliate links too. What matters: these are places our travellers funded and chose themselves for their own trips.
Our circle grows slowly and by invitation, often through someone already in it. If someone comes to mind, or you think you’d be a good fit, we’d love to hear from you.
Our membership is annual. Once you join, your membership remains active for the year and is automatically renewed on your renewal date.
You can manage your membership, including cancellation at any time, through your account portal.
We don’t offer prorated refunds for the remaining months of your membership year.
For now, we’re focused on building out our circle and collections. That said, ideas are always percolating in the background. If you have thoughts you’d like to share, we’d welcome them.
The collections & how we evaluate
Not yet. Right now, new routes and stays are added as our circle of travellers contributes trips. As we thoughtfully grow our circle, the destinations will continue to expand.
Our routes span the past decade or more. We share them because the essential intelligence (which hotels have character, how to pace your days, what makes a place worth your time) doesn’t expire quickly. Think of our itineraries as tested frameworks, not real-time guides.
That said, we’ll flag major closures when we hear about them. Of course, you should always verify specifics before you book.
These are our editorial judgments about how central a property could be to your trip planning, not a ranking of quality.
Worth Building Around: The property and the destination are effectively the same decision. You’re going for it, not just to it.
Worth Landing On: The destination stands on its own, and this is a strong choice for your time there.
Worth Considering: It belongs on the list, but the fit comes with more conditions.
Each stay also includes a line on when it might be the right call for you.
Every stay in our collection is somewhere one of our travellers chose and paid for themselves. That’s why it’s here, not its awards, brand or portfolio. A stay with none of the three isn’t a lesser one, since villas and small finds often won’t have any. But in our own planning, we sometimes like to consider the possibilities. We suspect you do too, which is why they’re filters. We look them up ourselves, so now and then we’ll likely be a little behind the latest changes, though we stay as current as we can.
A brand tells you which hotel group a stay is part of, and whether it might earn the loyalty points you’re after.
Portfolios are selections a hotel belongs to. The Michelin Guide, Mr & Mrs Smith and Tablet Hotels each choose the hotels they carry, and Smith and Tablet are also the two booking platforms we link to. Groups like Relais & Châteaux, Small Luxury Hotels of the World and The Leading Hotels of the World accept hotels that meet their standards. Belonging says a good deal about a place, but it is something a hotel pays for.
Awards are different. They’re an independent judgment of the hotel, and no hotel can apply or pay for one. We look to Condé Nast Traveler’s lists and Travel + Leisure’s World’s Best, for their long-standing editorial trust, and to the Michelin Key. A place on one of their lists in the past decade counts. Even if it isn’t this year’s, it’s still worth knowing. The Key is Michelin’s higher bar, awarded by its anonymous inspectors to hotels already in its Guide. We don’t distinguish between 1, 2 and 3 Key ratings, but yes, some of our stays hold all three.
Each route lists the meals worth knowing about: a restaurant worth booking, a café worth walking to, a hotel with more than one place to eat, a breakfast that stood out, or one packed to go before an early start. Some meals go unlisted because they weren’t memorable enough to pass on, or we couldn’t recall the name. Dining where we stayed is generally covered with the stay, so an everyday breakfast there won’t always appear on the route.
Every restaurant and experience on a route is somewhere our traveller actually went. Verdicts come from our spotlights, on places we’ve been back often enough to judge each one against others nearby, and every verdict carries the name of the person who gave it. No verdict just means we haven’t done a spotlight there yet, not that it’s a lesser pick.
Favourite: One we’d send friends to first.
In the rotation: One we go back to regularly.
When it fits: Good when it suits the day, but not necessarily worth going out of your way for.
Word of mouth reco: Recommended by someone whose taste we trust. We haven’t tried it ourselves yet.
On the radar: On our list to try. We haven’t been.
Not for us: We’ve been, and it didn’t suit us. Others may feel differently.
Sharing & usage
Yes, with some boundaries. You’re welcome to share individual route and stay links with friends, but they won’t see all the content until they become members. If they’d find it as useful as you do, we’d be glad to have them join.
What we do ask, though: don’t reproduce our content elsewhere and don’t share login credentials. Our travellers have shared their experiences in good faith, and we protect that trust.
No. Our collections are for personal use. Travel advisors may reference them when working with clients, but cannot reproduce or resell our content.
If you’re unsure whether your intended use is appropriate, please contact us.
No. The photos in our galleries belong to the photographers, properties or travellers who contributed them and are used with their permission. They’re shared to give you a genuine sense of place, not for reproduction or commercial use.
If you need images for your own project, we recommend contacting the property directly.
