Moving from St. John’s to Fogo Island over ten nights, this route keeps the coast close almost the whole way. St. John’s starts with a walk through the Battery and up Signal Hill. From there the trip shifts out to the East Coast Trail at Bay Bulls, icebergs off Cape Bonavista, the Skerwink Trail above Trinity Bay and a morning by boat through resettled outports. Three final nights on Fogo Island slow everything down: a Community Host morning, the Little Fogo Islands by boat and long meals over the Atlantic.
A remote inn on Fogo Island shaped the trip. The route from St. John's was chosen for coastal hiking, outports, time on the water and dinners with their own character.
My husband and I took this trip in July 2017, so there is one fairly important qualifier before getting into it. Some of the restaurants we loved have since closed, and a few of the inns have changed hands or changed what they offer. I've tried to flag those as we go and, where it makes sense, name somewhere I would look at now.
What hasn't changed is why I like the route. Ten nights working our way from St. John's along the coast, through Bay Bulls and the Bonavista Peninsula, then north for the ferry to Fogo Island. Looking back, it was the mix I remember most. Long coastal hikes, little fishing communities, some wonderful meals, plenty of Newfoundland weather, and then three nights on Fogo to slow everything down at the end.
