Exumas
The Exumas under sail, from protected cays and mangrove creeks to open anchorages and remarkably clear water. The route winds through Shroud Cay by dinghy, moors in the horseshoe anchorage at Warderick Wells, snorkels the Thunderball Grotto at Staniel Cay and drops anchor at Norman's Cay and Highbourne Cay before a last night off Rose Island. Off-grid and anchored somewhere new each night, a side of the Bahamas that takes a boat to reach.
A sailing trip through the Exumas that grew to two catamarans of family and close friends across three generations, built around time together on the water.
This trip wasn't planned so much as it grew, one conversation at a time. My sister was already planning a sailing trip through the Exumas with close friends and my brother and I decided to charter a boat and join her. When my dad, at eighty-five and a year after losing my mom, said he wanted to come too, what had started as a sailing trip between friends quietly became something more. Three generations, two catamarans and a March break on some of the most beautiful water in the world.
It was our first time travelling together since losing our mom, and that sat gently beneath everything. The Exumas have a way of stripping everything back, and being on the water with nowhere to be and nothing to do but be present with the people you love felt like exactly the right setting for it.
