Spain
Mallorca (Port de Sóller, Santanyí & Palma)
Mallorca in March, split between three different parts of the island, with the hotels as much a part of it as the places. In Port de Sóller, a promenade wraps the bay under the mountains, and the Dry Stone Route heads out through olive groves to the coast at Cala Deià. The long way round to Santanyí, by Pollença's Calvari steps, ends at a hotel that is reason enough to stop. In Palma, boutiques and cafés fill the old-town squares and the cathedral turns ochre above the water at sunset.
An island long on the list, visited in the off season and split between Port de Sóller, Santanyí and Palma, partly to test it as a future winter base.
We'd lived in Spain years before and never made it to Mallorca, which always felt like something we'd get to eventually. Our boys were away on school trips, my husband and I had a window we hadn't had in a while, and it fell over my birthday. Part of why we went was to work out whether Mallorca might be somewhere we'd spend more of the winter months in years to come. Five nights meant choosing a few spots rather than covering the whole island, and we decided on two nights in Port de Sóller, one in Santanyí and two in Palma.
