Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan & Kazakhstan
Tashkent, Silk Road, Bishkek & Almaty
This route through Central Asia crosses three countries and two very different kinds of travel. Uzbekistan's Silk Road cities come one after another by train: Khiva's walled old town empty at dawn, plov in the shade at Lyabi-Hauz in Bukhara and Samarkand's Registan lit up after dark. Kyrgyzstan turns rural and nomadic, with eagle hunting on the plains, horseback riding above Issyk-Kul and nights in guesthouses and yurts. Kazakhstan brings Charyn Canyon, the open steppe and Almaty.
A son teaching in Tashkent and his father flying out to join him, with the itinerary planned from home and the calls made on the ground.
Our eldest son had been teaching in Tashkent, and in May my husband flew over to travel with him before they came home together. It was their trip, and they made the calls. I helped them build the itinerary: Uzbekistan's three Silk Road towns by train, then a private guide-driver through Kyrgyzstan and over the border into Kazakhstan, finishing in Almaty. The day-by-day that follows is in my husband's words, from the notes he kept each day.
