Italy
Venice
Three nights in Venice, seen as much from the water as on foot. A private boat crosses the open lagoon and turns onto the Grand Canal on arrival. Mornings start on a canal-side terrace as the delivery barges pass, then the days go to narrow streets, quiet bridges, hidden squares and neighbourhood cafés. A vaporetto the long way shows the palazzo fronts only visible from a boat, and evenings go to dinner through the back canals as the city lights up.
A rare open window at home and an Italy golf trip already underway made Venice the natural place to meet for three nights.
My husband was already in Italy for his annual golf trip with friends, and with our three sons all away from home at the same time, a small window opened. Neither of us had been to Venice, so I flew over to meet him there at the end of his trip. He arrived by train from Rome, I arrived from Toronto, and we had three nights together to experience Venice for the first time.
