London

Family Trip June and July 2019

London for a first visit, kept on the move by river, bus and on foot. The days run from the Thames out to Greenwich, a foot on either side of the meridian, to the Crown Jewels, the walkways inside Tower Bridge and the wartime rooms beneath Whitehall. A windy climb over the O2 breaks up the museums. Each day ends with something after dark, and Canada Day falls in the middle, with poutine and friends out in a Covent Garden lane.

Behind the Route

A connection home from Spain turned into four nights in London, the city where the parents first dated, first lived together and decided to move abroad, bringing the family full circle.

Best For Families with young teens who want London's big history without losing them by day three.

We had been living in Sotogrande, Spain, and were moving back to Canada. There were no direct flights to Toronto from the international airports close to us, so we knew we were going to have to connect somewhere. Rather than make it one long travel day, we decided to turn the connection into a four-night stop in London with the boys. It gave us something to look forward to and helped take our minds off the fact that we were actually leaving Spain.

London also had a lot of history for us. It was where my husband and I had first dated and lived together, and on a trip back several years earlier, it was where we had first seriously talked about moving abroad with our family. Ending our time in Spain in London felt a little full circle, and it gave us a chance to share a city that my husband and I both love with our boys before heading home to Canada.
