Italy
Rome & Orvieto
A week in Italy split between ancient Rome and the Umbrian hills. Two nights in Rome move quickly, from the Colosseum arena floor to the Pantheon and the top of St. Peter's dome first thing in the morning, with a sidecar ride through Trastevere and up to the city's viewpoints in between. A hillside villa outside Orvieto slows everything down: a vineyard tasting, pool and tennis days, a view across to Civita di Bagnoregio and long lunches.
A friend's birthday at an Umbrian villa, with Rome beforehand: a first visit for everyone, planned around early-morning tours ahead of the crowds.
We were heading to Italy for a friend's birthday celebration at a villa outside Orvieto and decided to spend a couple of nights in Rome first. None of the three of us had been before, and our teenage son, who loves ancient Roman and Greek history, was particularly excited about this part of the trip.
Two nights isn't much time for a city like Rome, so we booked a few guided experiences, including early-morning tours to get ahead of the crowds. After that, we picked up a car and headed into the countryside for five nights with friends, where the days were much less planned.
