El Careyes Club & Residences

Costalegre Coast at Cayares, Mexico

Beach + Coast Resort
Worth Considering

The original Hotel Careyes opened in the 1970s and became a byword for a certain kind of untamed Mexican Pacific glamour. After years of sitting empty, it was reimagined by Mexican architects Gabriela Carrillo and Mauricio Rocha and reopened as El Careyes Club & Residences, a collection of suites and multi-bedroom residences overlooking a sweeping bay on the Costalegre coast. Five oceanfront infinity pools, a beach club, and a contemporary Mexican restaurant anchor the property. The wider Careyes community surrounds it: 35,000 acres of protected coast occupied by artists, architects, and assorted visionaries.

What It Is

A coastal enclave where some guests stay the night and others stay the season.

What It Is Not

A resort in the conventional sense, and the crowd skews older and artsy.

Worth Considering

If the Costalegre coast is the plan and a pioneering villa community model appeals over a conventional hotel.
