El Minzah Hotel

Tangier, Morocco

City Hotel
Worth Considering

Built in 1930 in Hispano-Moorish style, El Minzah sits between Tangier's old medina and its new town, where it has stood for nearly a century. The lobby's Arabesque woodwork and arched doorways set the tone. An Andalusian patio sits at the centre of the hotel, with gardens and an outdoor pool beyond. Three restaurants serve Moroccan and international cuisine, and the concierge handles everything from medina tours to day trips to Chefchaouen and the Atlantic coast. The rooms are traditional and generously sized. The hotel has hosted everyone from Winston Churchill to Rita Hayworth, and the old-world feel is intact. Some edges are rough, but that is part of the character.

What It Is

Old-world Tangier with a concierge who makes the city work for you.

What It Is Not

Modern or polished. A hotel with history and character, not a renovation.

Worth Considering

If Tangier is on the itinerary and you'd rather stay somewhere with ninety years of history behind it than something recently built, this is the hotel.
