Gran Hotel Costa Rica, Curio Collection by Hilton

San José, Costa Rica

City Hotel Hilton Honors
Worth Considering

Built in 1930 in neoclassical style, the Gran Hotel Costa Rica is the country's oldest hotel of its kind and its only declared architectural monument. It sits on Plaza de la Cultura, next to the National Theatre, with the Pre-Columbian Gold Museum below the square. The original tiling is still in the foyer. A 2018 renovation updated the rooms throughout while keeping the building's character intact; adjoining options are available on request. No pool. The fifth-floor Cultura5 serves Costa Rican and international cuisine with happy hour specials, a piano bar, and views over the city. Part of the Hilton Honors program.

What It Is

A central, full-service city hotel in a historic building.

What It Is Not

A reason to build time around San José. The city is a gateway, and so is this hotel.

Worth Considering

If a central San José transit night is on the itinerary.
