Lisbon
A long weekend in Lisbon moves from the steep streets of the old city to the open riverfront at Belém, with the shops and cafés of Chiado on the doorstep. A private tuk tuk climbs the hills and viewpoints before the narrow lanes of Alfama, a historic tram runs out to Belém and a box from Pastéis de Belém comes from a bakery making them since 1837. An apartment-style hotel in Chiado brings a different kind of ease, with room to live in, right in the middle of the city.
An Easter break city trip, needing somewhere drivable from home in southern Spain, new to young teenage boys, and direct for their father flying in from Canada.
We were living in Sotogrande, Spain and had eight or nine days of the boys' Easter break to work with before family arrived to visit us. My husband was returning from Canada, and instead of flying back to southern Spain, he flew direct into Lisbon and we met him there. It worked perfectly with the road trip we were planning through Portugal and then back into Spain towards the Basque region. This route covers the drive from Sotogrande to Lisbon and our time there.
