The Artist Grand Hotel of Art

Bilbao, Spain

City Hotel Michelin Key and Condé Nast Traveler Awards
Worth Landing On

The Artist Grand Hotel of Art was designed from the ground up by Javier Mariscal, and it shows. The atrium's Fossil Cypress sculpture spans the full height of the building. Original Mariscal pieces line the corridors. The rooftop terrace faces directly onto the Guggenheim Museum, where breakfast is served with views across the titanium curves and out to the river. With a spa and multiple dining options, it runs as a full-service five-star hotel rather than a boutique. The Old Town is walkable along the river. The hotel opened in 2002 and was fully refurbished in 2017.

What It Is

A design hotel built to be in conversation with the Guggenheim across the street.

What It Is Not

Intimate or boutique. It's a large hotel with a conference centre. The design carries it, not the scale.

Worth Landing On

When a Basque Country itinerary includes Bilbao and the Guggenheim is firmly on the agenda, this hotel earns the stay with location and design that suit the context.
