Oman
Muscat
Oman suits the traveller who wants both a resort and a country, whether solo or as a family. This route runs from a beachfront Muscat base, with the resort's concierge arranging private day trips to the Grand Mosque, tea at a Bedouin house and dune bashing in the Wahiba Sands. Two very different wadis follow: one busy and green, the other near-empty and reached by 4WD, where the reward is swimming through turquoise grottos. Pool days fill the time in between, with one evening out in the Mutrah Souq.
A solo stretch before meeting family in Istanbul, planned last minute around three requirements: warmth in January, safety for a woman alone, and a base where everything could be arranged on arrival.
Our youngest, then 20, was about to start an exchange in Istanbul. We had all been in Europe together, then split up for a stretch: my husband back at work, our youngest off skiing with friends, and all of us converging on Istanbul afterwards to get him settled. That left me days on my own and the freedom to pick anywhere that felt reasonable to arrive from London and depart for Istanbul. I wanted warmth at the end of January, downtime, somewhere that felt safe for a woman travelling alone, and ideally somewhere my husband wouldn't mind missing. Oman was never on his radar, though it is now.
