Peru

Cusco, Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu & Amazon

Wilderness + Safari, Countryside, and City Family Trip March 2012

Ten days moving from the high Andes to the Peruvian Amazon. A longer stay in the Sacred Valley takes in horseback riding, the Inca town of Ollantaytambo, salt pools terraced in white and amber and a via ferrata with ziplines back down. Machu Picchu comes in full sun, with llamas grazing between the temples. Then a long-tail boat heads deep into the Amazon, to rooms with one wall open to the jungle, candlelit nights with no electricity, piranha fishing and a fresh jaguar kill on a morning walk.

Behind the Route

A March break trip to introduce two young boys, 10 and 6, to ancient ruins and the Amazon, on the belief that younger kids are more open to that kind of travel than people assume.

Best For Families ready to take small children well beyond the usual family holiday.

Travelling with two young boys at ten and six, I needed to balance age-appropriate levels of interest to keep them engaged. We wanted to mix genuine adventure with ancient ruins and cultural stops, with enough flexibility to change gears when needed. In a country where we didn't speak the language, Peru felt like a trip that required a specialist operator. The Amazon portion had its own set of requirements: a lodge that could deliver full jungle immersion without compromising on the basics of comfort and safety for kids.

Ages in group: Adults (30-65), Tweens (8-11), and Toddlers and Young Kids (2-7)
