France
Paris, Provence & Cannes
The trip starts in Paris with a single afternoon of air-conditioned sightseeing, then takes the train south into Provence. Three nights in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence bring rock climbing in the Alpilles, a light show inside an old quarry and a Michelin-starred dinner. Two nights in the Luberon add a vineyard tasting, quieter hilltop wandering and sunset over the valley from Gordes. Then Cannes changes the pace, with beach clubs, a day on the water and livelier evenings.
A bar mitzvah in Israel set the end date. Provence was already on the list, and a Marseille flight connection made the south of France the right fit.
We were on our way to Israel for a nephew's bar mitzvah, and we knew we wanted a week in Europe first. The family was me, my husband, and our 17-year-old son. France came together partly by working backwards from airports and flight connections, partly because we wanted somewhere warm with enough variety to keep a teenager interested. My son had always wanted to see Paris, but my husband and I figured he'd go back on his own at some point, so we planned for one night there and put the real time into Provence and the coast, places he wouldn't necessarily go on his own and we had never been.
