Inverness, Lochinver, Torridon, Glencoe & Edinburgh

City and Countryside Multi-Generational Trip June 2023

A road trip from Inverness into the far northwest Highlands, partly on the NC500, where the roads lead past castle ruins and waterfalls to white-sand beaches with almost no one on them. The emptiest stretch is the heart of the trip. A day off the road trades the car for a Highland estate big enough for mountain biking and long walks as well as archery, croquet and long-haired Highland cattle. The drive south takes in Eilean Donan and Glencoe on the way to the cobbled curve of Edinburgh's old town.

Behind the Route

An ancestral trip taking the grandparents to a remote corner of Scotland they couldn't manage alone, shared with their grandson on his first visit, with enough activity to make it his trip too.

Best For Those wanting a scenic road trip where every generation has something to do.

Scotland has always been Grammy's homeland, and this was our son's first time there. Grammy and Grandpa, both in their eighties, wanted somewhere in Scotland they had never been, and that would not be easy for them to navigate on their own, which pointed us toward the remote northwest Highlands. They were staying on for their regular time in Oban, which shaped the finish.

Ages in group: Older Teens and 20s, Adults (30-65), and Older Adults 65+
