Cambodia & Thailand
Phnom Penh, Cardamom, Siem Reap, Khao Lak, Krabi & Bangkok
Moving from the ancient temples of Angkor to the turquoise waters of Krabi, this itinerary earns its relaxation. Cambodia opens with the Killing Fields and the weight they carry, then gives way to a zipline arrival deep into the jungle. Tented luxury, waterfall swims and a ranger patrol make those three days unlike the rest of the trip. Siem Reap and Angkor follow at a pace that does them justice. Then Thailand: an elephant sanctuary, limestone karsts and the high-low contrast of Bangkok.
A mother-son trip timed around a volunteer placement in Bangkok, built for adventure in stays that would work whether or not the father could join.
My son was volunteering in Bangkok, which shaped our route and timing. My husband would join partway through (work commitments meant his participation wasn't guaranteed), and we'd finish in Bangkok where my son would be working. Since I might be travelling on my own with my son for more than just the first half, I wanted an itinerary safe enough to manage independently yet adventurous in spirit. My husband and I had honeymooned here at 26, so I came in with a strong sense of what the region could offer and what would land for a first-time visit. So this was high-end luxury at extraordinary Southeast Asian properties, a far cry from my backpacking days here in the mid-90s.
