Italy

Venice, Tuscany, Rome & Amalfi Coast

City, Countryside, and Beach + Coast Multi-Generational Trip June 2018

This Italian route balances adventure and indulgence across four very different stops without ever feeling rushed. Venice comes on foot and by water, with a lesson rowing a gondola between cicchetti stops. Tuscany is the slow middle: farmhouse living, a cooking class, horseback riding and hill towns through the Val d'Orcia. Rome is ancient sites by golf cart and on foot, then Pompeii, the surprise of the trip, on the way to the Amalfi Coast for cliff jumping and sunsets from a clifftop terrace. Italy at its most varied.

Behind the Route

A family trip built around what Italy does for different ages, pairing the cities the boys needed to see with regions the adults had missed when backpacking.

Best For Those who want four distinct versions of Italy, made for teens and adults alike.

My parents had not been to Italy since their backpacking trip in 1970, and my husband and I had not been since 1991, when we backpacked through after university. Backpacking had not lent itself well to Tuscany, and neither of us had made it to the Amalfi Coast, so both felt overdue. It felt like the right moment to go back together and introduce the boys to a country that had stayed with all of us (it was also the boys' first time in Europe). We knew Venice would captivate them, and Rome would speak for itself. A direct flight into Venice and out of Rome made the routing straightforward, and the itinerary took shape from there.

Ages in group: Young Teenagers (12-15), Older Teens and 20s, Adults (30-65), and Older Adults 65+
